Chardonnay, Merlot, and White Zinfandel Banksy Wine Bottles
Banksy Merlot Wine Box
I chose Banksy as my artist to focus on for my wine bottle series. I love his work and have been following him for years so I already had some ideas to work with from the start. I chose to have one more expensive wine (Merlot) and two less expensive wines (White Zinfandel and Chardonnay). I chose three artworks as stencils for the labels. I chose the man throwing the flowers for my expensive bottle because it represents peace which is the hardest to achieve, which makes it worth more. I chose the girl with the balloon and the rat painting a heart for the less expensive bottles because they represent love and hope which are easier to achieve. For my cheaper wines, I made them a white bottle and used the white of my black and white stencils of his artwork to show through the label. I did the opposite for my expensive bottle, making it a black bottle so the black of the stencil would show through the label. I added masking tape on the four corners of each label for three reasons. One, so the user can take the label off and use the stencil provided to spray paint surfaces. Two, because I am trying to work with texture in this project so the masking tape adds small texture to the bottle. Three, I know from personal experience and others that when you want to spray paint or just use a stencil, you tape down the four corners to hold it in place, but it can easily be taken off too. I also added the masking tape around the neck of each bottle where the wrapping to seal the bottle would go. I chose to make the less expensive bottles with regular masking tape coloring because it is cheaper and they are the cheaper bottles. I chose to make the expensive bottle with red masking tape to make it a bolder color to match the Merlot color and because the red tape is more expensive. The back labels are printed right on the bottle and have his signature spray painted bigger and his story. They are inverse in black and white color depending on the bottle color.
I chose to expand on my wine bottle series that focused on Banksy for this project. I decided to make a box for my expensive bottle (Merlot). I wanted to work with more texture since that is what I was focusing on for this project. I found a picture of a brick and concrete mixed wall and new that was the perfect background for my box. Banksy does his graffiti on street walls which are mostly concrete and brick walls. I added his signature spray painted large on the front of the box as if it was actually spray painted on the wall itself. I made it in the red color to relate back to the Merlot bottle and the hero color of my project. I wanted to keep the information on the sides to a minimum to so it wouldn’t over power the texture since Banksy’s work usually stands alone. I added the word “Merlot” on the bottom of each side, so they know what wine is in the bottle. I added Banksy’s story also on the back so someone could read it in the store and understand what the bottles were based off of. The inside of the box would just be the red hero color to relate it back to the Merlot bottle and break away from the brick and concrete background.
